In her Auftritt / Appearance project, Sigrid Kurz references the topological plateau of the Schanzlgarten, whose terrace shape is reminiscent of a stage due to its elevated position. Here, she also refers to the cultural identity of Salzburg as a stage and festival city and stages the square as a through-stage for passers-by who become protagonists when crossing the square. Located on one of the access routes into Salzburg’s old city centre, the square is crossed by many visitors and tour groups. Sigrid Kurz structures the asphalt surface of the square with yellow lines to link its various elements, trees, benches, lanterns, and the path. Irregularly shaped fields that are identified with terms taken from stage technology and theatre appear between the intersection points.
Sigrid Kurz designs conceptual fields of representation which, like a system of signs, refer to different performative forms of representation. Passers-by, who are given the opportunity to perform as actors in the city, interact in this symbolic playing field. (Sabine Winkler)
